Back to Moscow

Smolensky Highriser

Up on the hill, in front of us the majestic building almost covers the skies.  It is one of the scyscrapers of Stalin’s era on Smolenskaya Square.  In my childhood I was greatly impressed with them; they were so beautifully illuminated on the Soviet holidays – November 7th and May 1st!  This one was my favorite, with its pilasters, elongated windows and small towers sitting on the both sides of the main tower.  Kind of Soviet Gothic, questing – if not to the heavens, but to the stars – “All the higher, higher, higher!”
